Description

For 4th and 5th grade students. Led by TAPAS artist (Teaching Artists Presenting in Asheville Schools) Phillip Nogueras, students will learn how to make their own
instruments from natural and recycled materials. The type of instrument will depend on the age group, and teacher’s goals, but examples include Bamboo Wind Chimes, Recycled String Instruments, Clapper Sticks, Tongue Drum and more. Students will learn how to engage with the natural world and recycled world through making. Additionally, they will learn how to use hand tools, including: saws, hand drill, sewing techniques, knots, and more. Each student will leave the residency with their own instrument to bring home. After the residency students will have the skill to make more of their own instruments or crafts. During the workshop we will also learn basic rhythm and instrument technique as well as sing together to start class each day.
